When Christmas approaches many people are busy making preparations. They may decorate their homes, prepare meals and bake cookies. If the family will be together this too takes additional preparation. There might even be time and money spent shopping looking for the right Christmas gift. In many ways it seems to be a season of preparation.

As Christians we mark the season of Advent and this too is a time of preparation. It is a season where our attention is focused to the future as we are in expectation of the arrival of Jesus. We know that Jesus has already appeared once. He came to Bethlehem and the world in which we live. He walked this earth with all of its troubles and trials. He did all things according to the will of God. Jesus came as a human being so that He would be able to offer His life as a sacrifice. He would suffer and die upon a cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Now as we celebrate the arrival of Jesus and look back upon His life we know that the Lord Jesus who has risen from the dead and ascended into heaven has promised that He will again return. He will come back to judge the world and receive all who believe in Him into heaven. We can be confident that the Lord Jesus will come back to take us to heaven because He has forgiven our sin and granted to us new life. Such a gift of salvation is there for all who believe in Him. It is there for you.

As we anticipate the arrival of Jesus there are various preparations we too need to make. Yes we prepare the church for the season. But as we wait for the return of Jesus we rest in the grace of God, we witness to others, we run from idols, we pray like Paul prayed, and we encourage others. We rejoice!

This year's Advent series is based on 1 Thessalonians. First and Second Thessalonians speaks much to us about the second coming of Jesus. It says lots to us about living in this season of Advent as we not only anticipate the celebration of Christmas but as we wait for the second coming of Jesus. How should we prepare? What kind of things should we do? How do we get ready for that special day when Jesus will return again? These are the type of things we will address in this year's Wednesday Advent series.

Join us for this special Advent series entitled, Lo! He comes with Clouds Descending. Each Wednesday in this season we will consider an aspect of preparing for the return of Jesus. The service dates, times and themes are as follows:

  • Wednesday, December 4, 7:00 pm, Our Two-Minute Drill
  • Wednesday, December 11, 7:00 pm, Praying Like Paul
  • Wednesday, December 18, 7:00 pm, Faithful Watching and Waiting
  • Tuesday, December 24, 4:00 pm, Rejoice Always
  • Wednesday, December 25, 9:00 am, Christmas Comes Every Day

In anticipation of our first message on December 4 you may want to prepare by reading 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 and ask yourself: What do you do when time is short? Time will go quickly and I look forward to meeting together with you in these Advent services.

Blessings on all of your preparations.
